Since the first publication of the book in 1999, Turkey took the path to dictatorship, creating increasing isolation and looking at the East.

A mixture of religion and greed, the former as a mask for the latter.

In 2007 (laat dus) werd het ophefmakende boek in het Nederlands vertaald en uitgegeven door Nieuw Amsterdam Uitgevers en wij kochten het toen aan.
Een paar dagen nadat wij het op onze website te koop hadden aanboden, kregen wij een telefoontje uit Limburg met het dringende verzoek het boek van onze website te verwijderen. Het verzoek kwam over als een dwingend bevel. Dat pressiegroepen zo ver gaan, was en is verontrustend. U kunt wel raden dat wij aan het verzoek/bevel geen gevolg hebben gegeven. Ondertussen is het duidelijk hoe het in Turkije met de persvrijheid gesteld is.

De Armeense vervolging wordt beschouwd als de eerste volkerenmoord in de Twintigste eeuw en is de afgelopen jaren zowel in de wetenschap als in het publieke debat in belang toegenomen. Toch is er over de langdurige gevolgen van deze "vergeten genocide" weinig bekend. Hoe beïnvloedt zo'n gebeurtenis het wereldbeeld, de politieke standpunten en het dagelijkse leven van de slachtoffers en hoe gaan de overlevenden en nabestaanden hiermee om? In 2006, Lewis wrote that Iran had been working on a nuclear weapon for fifteen years. In August 2006, in an article about whether the world can rely on the concept of mutual assured destruction as a deterrent in its dealings with Iran, Lewis wrote in the Wall Street Journal about the significance of 22 August 2006 in the Islamic calendar. The Iranian president had indicated he would respond by that date to U.S. demands regarding Iran's development of nuclear power. Lewis wrote that the date corresponded to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427, the day Muslims commemorate the night flight of Muhammad from Jerusalem to heaven and back. Lewis wrote that it would be "an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and, if necessary, of the world".
According to Lewis, mutual assured destruction is not an effective deterrent in the case of Iran, because of what Lewis describes as the Iranian leadership's "apocalyptic worldview" and the "suicide or martyrdom complex that plagues parts of the Islamic world today". [wiki]

Although Atatürk himself never quite comes alive in it, Mango’s work will surely become the standard biography because it gives a detailed and convincing account of Turkish life both under Atatürk and before him. Moreover, despite Mango’s admiration for Atatürk, he has written the most irreverent scholarly biography of him yet to appear. Mango describes in detail qualities that previous biographers avoided: his colossal arrogance, his exaggerated claims to have changed history, and the callousness and contempt with which he treated women. Atatürk, says Mango, was not above the “judicial murder” of former colleagues. At times, his regime came close to being fascist. The last major English-language biography of Atatürk, by Patrick Kinross,3 relied largely on Atatürk’s recollection of events. Mango does not, and his book is bound to have an effect on the Atatürk legend.

A reappraisal of the giant massacres perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire, and then the Turkish Republic, against their Christian minorities.

Between 1894 and 1924, three waves of violence swept across Anatolia, targeting the region's Christian minorities, who had previously accounted for 20 percent of the population. By 1924, the Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks had been reduced to 2 percent. Most historians have treated these waves as distinct, isolated events, and successive Turkish governments presented them as an unfortunate sequence of accidents. The Thirty-Year Genocide is the first account to show that the three were actually part of a single, continuing, and intentional effort to wipe out Anatolia's Christian population.

The years in question, the most violent in the recent history of the region, began during the reign of the Ottoman sultan Abdulhamid II, continued under the Young Turks, and ended during the first years of the Turkish Republic founded by Ataturk. Yet despite the dramatic swing from the Islamizing autocracy of the sultan to the secularizing republicanism of the post-World War I period, the nation's annihilationist policies were remarkably constant, with continual recourse to premeditated mass killing, homicidal deportation, forced conversion, mass rape, and brutal abduction. And one thing more was a constant: the rallying cry of jihad. While not justified under the teachings of Islam, the killing of two million Christians was effected through the calculated exhortation of the Turks to create a pure Muslim nation.

Revelatory and impeccably researched, Benny Morris and Dror Ze'evi's account is certain to transform how we see one of modern history's most horrific events.
